Stars fall in season opener - Sunday, March 22, 2009

Despite extended minuites from Casey Frank, Dillon Boucher and new signing Blagov Janey all of whom played almost the full game the Stars where unable to get the W in their first outing lossing to the Harbour Heat 93 to 81.

In what was obviously the first game of the season for both sides with early play resulting in missed passes and baskets both teams slowly lifted the intensity and the lead swapped many times in the first half with the Heat leading by 3 at the major break.

A spirited run from the Heat saw them stretch their lead to 10 at the end of the the 3rd quarter but then the Stars came out firing and with some very vocal support from a smaller crowd than the game deserved they clawed back to within 1 point on the back of a very impressive alley oop from Frank who chipped in with 20 points whilst Janey with 25 lead all scorers only Boucher who scored a rare treble with 18 rebounds 10 assists and 18 points rounded out those

The young Auckland Stars have been training hard since the beginning of the year.  With some key players involved in the ANBL it has been an opportunity for Head Coach Kenny Stone to invite several young players into preseason training with hopes of making the regular season roster.

"Its a great time of the year as it allows me to do more coaching and it allows younger players to get a taste of what it takes to step up to the NBL level," said Stone.

The core group of players on the roster that are currently training include new signing Hayden Allen, 2008 Rookie of the Year Tyrone Davey, 2007 Rookie of the Year Charlie Piho, 21 year old 'veteran' Dylan Perfect-Tait and experienced point guard Jonathan Southey, who sat out last season from the NBL.

Some of the young players viaing to make the Stars 2009 roster include 6'5" swingman Cory Poa, Travis McIlroy, who is a New Zealand representative at lawn bowls and a competitive swimmer, post man Sifa Puteni, forwards John Lowe, Campbell Ross, guards Nick Claasen and schoolboy Paul Organ.  Also taking limited part in training thus far has been Zach Makavilitagia, who is part of the Nueian Rugby 7s team, competing in the <

In what was a stunning display of defensive play, key Youthtown Stars player Dillion Boucher showed the crowd at the North Shore Events Centre against the Perth Wildcats (30/10/2008) that you don't need to score 30 points to be seen as a hero.Trailing by 11 points when Boucher came on the Breakers intensity lifted and in what was one of the most thrilling games of the year Dillon played 28.43 minutes scored a season high 11 points pulled down 6 offensive rebounds and recorded 4 assists.

Stars Victorious in Battle of the Bridge

By Scott Spicer

The Youthtown Auckland Stars claimed their first win of the season on Saturday night with a 91-86 home victory over cross-town rivals Appliance Shed Harbour Heat in round two of the Dominion Finance NBL.

Both teams competed hard, but with the game on the line Dylan Perfect-Tait hit a crucial three-pointer to give Auckland a five-point buffer, and Casey Frank converted four consecutive free-throws as the Stars handed the Heat their first defeat of the season.

The first quarter was a tightly contested affair as the lead swung back and forth. A three-pointer by Dylan Perfect-Tait at the end of the quarter gave the Stars a 22-21 edge at the first break.

Both teams traded baskets at the beginning of the second period until a mini-run by the Stars put them ahead by seven points midway through the quarter.

Casey Frank was forced to the bench after picking up his third foul, but Adrian Majstrovich picked up the slack by scoring all of Auckland’s points in a key 9-2 run to extend their lead to double digits.

Majstrovich capped off the quarter with a three-point play to give the Stars a 50-39 advantage and the momentum heading into the halftime break.

Auckland continued to apply the pressure at the beginning of the second half, stretching the lead out to 15 points midway through the third quarter and appeared to have the game well in their hands.

However, Harbour mounted a ferocious comeback, scoring 12 straight points to get themselves back into the game and were still within striking distance at the end of the third quarter – trailing 68-64.

Frank came out energised to start the fourth period, scoring seven points in the opening minutes to once again extend the margin to double digits.

But Harbour were not prepared to go down without a fight, with Tim Behrendorff hitting a rare three-pointer to cap a 9-0 run that pulled the Heat within two points with four minutes remaining in the game.

With just one minute on the clock and the Stars clinging to a slim two-point lead, the Heat had the ball in their hands and an opportunity to complete the comeback.

But they failed to capitalise on their next possession and the Stars made them pay for it at the other end of the court – Perfect-Tait found himself wide open behind the three-point line and the 20-year-old guard calmly knocked down the biggest shot of his NBL career to give the Stars an 87-82 advantage.

A hook shot by Behrendorff pulled the Heat back to within three points, but with little time left on the clock the Heat were forced to foul, sending Frank to the free-throw line where he sealed the game.

Casey Frank led all scorers with 31 points on 12/17 shooting, along with 9 rebounds, and is averaging 26.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in the early stages of the season.

Adrian Majstrovich provided a second scoring punch for the Stars with 29 points, while Dylan Perfect-Tait had three three-pointers in his 10-point haul.

After missing Auckland’s first game of the season, Dillon Boucher collected 13 rebounds, including 7 at the offensive end, and also added 4 assists.

The Heat had a balanced scoring attack with six players in double figures, led by Tim Behrendorff with 21 points on an efficient 8/9 from the field.

Daryl Cartwright finished with 19 points, Hayden Allen had 12 points, Oscar Forman and BJ Anthony had 11 points apiece, while Mika Vukona added 10 points.

Stars Fall to Saints in Season Opener

By Scott Spicer

After a gruelling loss to the Harbour Heat two days earlier, the Century City Wellington Saints salvaged their opening round double-header with an 85-81 victory over the Youthtown Auckland Stars on Saturday night at ASB Stadium.

Saints import Marquis Webb, limited to just 11 points against the Heat, exploded for 16 points in the second quarter alone to help his side build a hefty 20-point lead in the first half.

The Stars, playing with just one import and without the services of Dillon Boucher, managed to claw their way back to within two points in the final quarter of the game but came up short in the waning minutes.

Webb finished the game with 27 points to lead all scorers, while fellow import Nick Horvath had 16 points and 6 rebounds for the Saints.

Luke Martin scored 11 of his 13 points in the decisive fourth quarter, including a pair of clutch three-pointers to impede Auckland’s run, and Troy McLean added 11 points and 5 boards.

Casey Frank led the way for the Stars with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists, while American import Larry Bratcher contributed 13 points and 3 assists in his league debut.

Adrian Majstrovich finished with 16 points and 9 boards against his former team, and Reece Cassidy added 13 points in his return to the Stars.

Stars Announce Roster for 2008 Season

The Youthtown Auckland Stars have today announced the bulk of their roster for the upcoming 2008 National Basketball League season.

Returning from last year’s squad are veteran forwards Dillon Boucher and Casey Frank, shooting guards Josh Clark and Valance Te Ratana, point guard Fia Gatoloai, and power forward Vallance McCarthy.

Small forward Reece Cassidy returns to the Stars after a season with the Manawatu Jets, while Dan Barrett is also back in a Stars uniform after spending the last few years overseas.

The Stars have also landed one of the most highly regarded players in New Zealand basketball circles, former NBL MVP Adrian Majstrovich.

Majstrovich played four seasons for the Bay Hawks, winning Rookie of the Year in 2003 and Most Valuable Player in 2004. Last season he averaged 11.2 points and 6.2 rebounds in 13 games for the Wellington Saints.

Kenny Stone returns as head coach of the Stars, and will be joined by NBL legend Ben Anthony as assistant coach for the season.

Point guard Lindsay Tait has committed to the Stars for next season and is in the process of finalising his contract details with the club.

Tait is currently in Australia recovering from surgery to his right shoulder. Sources close to Tait say that the surgery was a success and that he is recovering well.

He is expected to return to New Zealand soon to continue the rehabilitation process, but is likely to miss a considerable amount of the NBL season while his shoulder heals fully.

The Stars are looking forward to a successful season in 2008, and coach Stone is pleased with the make-up of the team.

"I like the nice mix of experience and youth in this team and I like the direction we are headed.

"We have added some depth for this season's team which will benefit everyone. The young players who gained experience last season will benefit from that and continue to get opportunities to contribute this season.

"Adrian's a great signing for the Stars as he adds an impact player that we will miss with Lindsay out injured for much of the season and he will add depth in our front court.

"We will miss Lindsay but hope to have him back late in the season and will assist him with his rehab when he returns to New Zealand.”

The Stars begin their season on 1st March when they host the Wellington Saints at ASB Stadium, Kohimarama.
